Split Nine Patch

36 x 36 INCH QUILT

To make a quilt that is 36 by 36 inches, create 9 nine patch squares. Each patch is 4.5 inches. Organize them in complementary colors/patterns with a pop-out color or design in the center. All of the fabrics do not have to match but it looks great if they follow the same theme (all kiddie designs, all flowers, etc). Sew the squares together as you would the NICU quilt.

then Contrast, Pop-out, Contrast, then another row that's the same as the first

Once all 9 squares are completed, cut along the dotted lines to turn each nine-patch into four squares. You should have 36 pieces.

Same as the first, only with two dotted lines splitting it into 4 equal pieces

Then arrange all of the pieces into a 6 x 6 design. Starting with the first column, sew each piece together to create one long column. Do that for the next five columns. Iron the seams in one direction, such that the seams in opposite directions across the columns. Then sew the columns together, matching the seams.

Add a border (approximately 2 inches) to make the final dimension 36 x 36 inches.

Next, select your backing and batting, pin the layers together, then machine quilt it as you desire, and sew on the binding.
